Dialogue: CAUSE AND EFFECT

Dialog : Cause And Effect About Chemical Reaction

We can divide the most common linking words and expressions of cause and effect into four group :
1. Coordinating Conjunctions: for (cause), so (effect)
2. Subordinating Conjunctions: because, since, if, whenever, so that, as (cause)
3. Conjunctive Adverbs: therefore, for this reason, as a result, thus, that is why, consequently (effect)
4. Preposition: because of, reasons for, consequences of, due to (cause)
Jelpa: hi Aulia!
Aulia: hello Jelpa!
Jelpa: Aulia, I have a magic attraction.
Aulia: Really? Show me!
Jelpa: I cannot do it here. So instead you guess what would happen if I dipped the paper money into a glass of alcohol and water, and then I burned it. What is the effect?
Aulia: I know the answer. As a result is that the paper money are not burned.
Jelpa: wow. That’s true. Where do you know?
Aulia: I have seen the videos on the internet.
Jelpa: Thus why do you think the paper money does not burn?
Aulia:  alcohol can form a thin liquid on a sheet of money. Because alcohol is flammable and its density is less than water, the alcohol remains in the top layer. The money sheet will not burn because alcohol cannot seeps into the tightly woven money webbing.
Jelpa: Then if I use plain paper, what is the effect? Whether the paper will not burn?
Aulia: plain paper cannot be used for this experiment, because alcohol is absorbed much more quickly on woven loose paper fibers. So the effect is the paper will come burning.
Jelpa: Well like that. I wanted to try to do it right away.
Aulia: Be careful in doing so. Keep your face away from the solution. Alcohol is very dangerous because it is volatile.
Jelpa: Yes just be calm down. I will be very careful. After doing so I will be a great magician. Ha ha.
Aulia: LOL. That is not a magic attraction. It's just one of those amazing chemical reactions.
Jelpa: okay Aulia. It’s time to go back to class.  See you later.

Aulia: bye Jelpa. See you!

  1. Except paper money, what we can use to try this experiment?

    1. We can also use filter paper. Filter paper has a thick enough fiber so that alcohol is not absorbed by filter paper because it is blocked by a layer of water

  2. Why alcohol is flammable?

    1. The nature of alcohol when interacting with the air (put in the open) then the alcohol more easily bound to the gas so that alcohol more quickly evaporated, because the faster evaporation that causes alcohol more flammable

  3. What will happen if the paper money we dipped into a water without alcohol?

    1. Water is extinguishing fire. If we do the experiment without alcohol, then the paper money will not burn.

Chemically the word "burn" or "burning" means more or less "reacting a compound or element with oxygen"
The water of the compound is H2O, two carbon atoms with one oxygen atom. Meaning more or less, water is the result of "combustion" of hydrogen. Burning results can not be burned anymore.
While alcohol, for example ethanol compounds C2H5OH, although it contains one oxygen atom, but still has two carbon atoms and four burning hydrogen atoms.

VIDEO (Alkane derived compounds)

Let's check this video https://youtu.be/UDIupJRhosI ALCOHOL All alcohols contain the -OH group, for example ethanol. Alcohol has similar chemical properties. All ethers contain an -O- group, for example dimethylters. Ether has similar chemical properties. Groups such as -OH and -O- are replaced in hydrocarbon chains called functional groups. They dominate chemical molecules and provide characteristic properties. The hydrocarbon chain is the symbol of R. The naming of organic compounds is divided into two, named naming according to IUPAC (systematic name) and trivial naming (common name). Naming according to IUPAC is established by IUPAC (International Union and Pure Applied Chemistry), whereas trivial naming is a naming system that has been known before the establishment of the naming system according to the IUPAC. The trivial name is more popular in industry and commerce because of its easy mention. Nomenclature of Alcohol (alkanol) IUPAC: Alcohol is a derived compound ...

Hydrogen is a very useful element. Because hydrogen is used to make ammonia for fertilizers, distillation metals, and methanol to make basic materials such as plastics. Hydrogen is also used as a rocket fuel in which liquid hydrogen is combined with liquid oxygen to produce a powerful explosion. Scientists hope that someday hydrogen can ...
